Speaking a CeBIT, Professor August Wilhelm Scheer made the astonishing claim that one in four Germans would be happy to have an implanted RFID chip in their skin if it meant more convenience for them, particularly waiting times at the grocery store.

As well as foretelling the imminent demise of the CD and DVD, Professor Scheer said that implanting chips into humans was going to become commonplace. “The speed of the development is not going to be reduced this decade,” he told an audience of tech execs and politicians including German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “Some developments can already be seen. CDs and DVDs are going to disappear as material sources of information. Wallpaper will be replaced by flat screens and many of us will have chips implanted beneath our skin by the end of next decade.

Rather than being based on pure speculation, Scheer said that his organistion BITKOM had actually conducted research which had shown that a quarter of Germans would be happy to have a chip implanted if it meant they could access services more easily.

“We just carried out a survey and one out of four people are happy to have a chip planted under their skin for very trivial uses for example to pass gates more quickly at a discotheque for example and to be able to pay for things more quickly in the supermarket,” said Scheer. “The wilingness of the population to accept our technology is certainly given.”

The results of that survey are on their website [pdf] . If you look closer at Mr. Scheer’s statistics, 72% do not want an RFID implant.

Stats are hard to figure out, especially when it’s been reported that 1 in 7 Germans want the Berlin Wall back because the country was better off when it was split.

One thing to point out is that The Love Police are correct that they are do not have to give out any personal information under section 44. They were also correct to point out that they do not consent to a search. The police could have performed a pat down. In the end, because everyone remained calm, they were determined not to be a threat.

If you’ve ever wanted to know just what is out there in the numerous databases, The Consumerist has a detailed list so that you can perform a complete background check on yourself.

Now you can know what Big Brother knows about you and get access to the same dirt everyone from your boss, landlord, insurance agent, to your favorite casino has on you. Here is a comprehenisve list of websites and phone numbers for most of the “specialty” consumer reports, like your employment, rental, and check writing history. Be sure to check them out and correct any errors, before a crisis hits.

Unfortunately, many of the places on the list are also not free.

When looking at the list that The Consumerist has compiled, it’s a little scary and nerve-wrecking to know that ChoicePoint is on that list. They were caught selling information to criminal organizations in the past, which doesn’t leave me thinking my data is very secure.

LexisNexus won’t let you opt-out unless you are lucky enough to be a politician, work in law enforcement, have filed an identity theft crime report or have a restraining order on file somewhere. Those of us that are not luck cannot stop them from spying on us.

Having a database of prescription drug purchase history also seems like some sort of privacy violation as well. Ingenix is part of UnitedHealth Group. UnitedHealth Group owns UnitedHealthcare, the second-largest insurer in the nation. The Medical Information Bureau (MIB) is also very scary.

It is also likely that many of these companies buy and sell their information amongst one another. There is also far more detail about you in these databases than you could ever dream of and there’s no way to opt out and very difficult to protect your own information.

A local newscast has exposed that, when some Florida police officers write you a traffic ticket, an extra “smiley face” message is given to the judge, unlawfully characterizing you without your consent or knowledge.

It doesn’t matter if the judge ignores any of the smiley faces or not. It’s the public perception that matters. It is corruption because a police officer is intending on influencing a judge’s decision, which affects whether a person is guilty or innocent and whether the city’s coffers get filled just a little bit more.

Two months ago, REAL-ID went into effect in Florida and many residents are having problems proving their identities to obtain the new driver’s licenses. Florida is one of the few states complying with the law as many states have said that REAL-ID is too expensive to implement and the federal government has extended the deadline several times.
