Comcast has been touting it’s new 105MBit service and how quickly you can accomplish your online tasks. Everyone was waiting to see what idiotic cap was going to be installed. It’s 250GB. Now before anyone thinks that’s a lot of data, stop and think for a moment what 250GB really is.

At 5 hours of full bandwidth, you’d have used up roughly 235GB of your cap.

Here is a list of things that will make you hit the cap very quickly.

  • Streaming video or audio from places such as Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, C-SPAN, Skype, YouTube, any sports package (such as MLB extra innings), iTunes
  • Mirroring or p2p sharing of Linux distros
  • Running a Tor exit
  • Online gaming

While some may argue that the average user won’t reach this limit, there will clearly be enough users that do that the caps will become a problem. Comcast may also be reaching out to families who would use the full 105MBit speed at once because there are several people in the house that are doing several things at once and they all share the line. While it’s great that everyone in the house no longer needs to worry about lag, it still doesn’t cover the issue of the ridiculously low cap. If you’re pay $105 a month for such a service (before tax of course) you don’t want such an arbitrarily low cap.

Keep in mind as well, this is a new promotional price. Comcast is likely to raise the price in the future. I’m sure many will stick with their lower, more affordable speeds with no caps.
