The British police are considering a new weapon to add to their arsenal. The super taser. Meant to shock you before you’re fired upon and have you complying without using it, this weapon should be considered scary to anyone who might ever think of showing up at a protest. It’s already in use in the USA.
The eXtended Range Electronic Projectile fires a barbed electrode from a modified shotgun that hooks into the target’s skin and delivers a 20sec shock. It is already used by US police.
If the recipient tries to pull off the device, they get another shock. Traditional Tasers fire electrified darts up to 7.6m (25ft) and deliver a 5sec shock. The weapon was ‘revolutionary’, said manufacturer Taser International.
But Amnesty International claimed 334 people in the US died from 2001 to 2008 after being hit. ‘This is effectively a shotgun that fires electric-shock bullets,’ said Amnesty arms expert Oliver Sprague. The new device raised the risk of serious injury to the face and head, he added.
