The city of Vancouver has just announced that their policy prohibiting cops from taking away your camera or making you erase your photos will now be enforced.

Vancouver police are not allowed to seize cameras or cell phones from anyone, unless they have consent, a warrant, or the person has been lawfully arrested.

Constable Lindsay Houghton tells the Province newspaper the policy has always been there, but it’s now in writing and updated in their official regulations manual.

In April, officers seized the camera of a Province photographer at a police-related shooting. A month later, Chief Constable Jim Chu apologized.

So, while you can now take pictures and, supposedly, not have to worry about them being deleted unless you’re arrested, you still have to worry about the Canadian police’s desire to wiretap the entire Internet and listen in to what you’re doing.
